Vancouver Fashion Week features more Canadian Designers

We attended a few days of Vancouver Fashion Week and were pleasantly surprised to see more Canadian Designers than the last time we attended. This year there were 19 Canadian Designers, showing their collections, out of a total of 47.

We especially liked Vancouver designer, Ali Mokhtarian’s, Valerio Collection of menswear. The leather jackets were made with both knit and leather giving the jackets a softer more body conscious look. The use of several colours, repeated, gave the collection cohesion along with perfectly selected accessories and perfectly selected models. The Collection could easily be shown on the runway at Men’s Fashion Week, Milan.

Another Vancouver Designer that stood out was Angela Huang, originally from Taipei, with her simple designs. She chose to keep her pallet white only and with the clever use of cutting and asymmetrical designs, she created a stunning collection. Everything was very wearable.

A Polish Designer, Kamila Gawronska, sent out her A/W 2013 Collection of designs in  red, black and white. We were reminded of ecclesiastical robes, some of the designs had subtle crosses woven in the fabric. Each piece was impeccably made. We especially loved the flattering neckline of a white brocade dress/coat, a red and white jacket (also in black and white) and simple dresses. I hope to see more of this designer’s work. Thanks for showing in Vancouver.

Overall, there seems to be some improvement in Vancouver Fashion Week, with a bit shorter waiting times, more variety, showing more Canadian talent and an improved website. Maybe just a few too many people posing  and there “to be seen” instead of really appreciating the talent on the runway.
