Montreal Fashion Week-Culture and Fashion

Montreal Fashion Week featured designers, who live in Montreal, but came from many other countries. Their designs for Fall/Winter 2013/14 reflected their culture and Montreal fashion, a unique combination. The rest of Canada rarely sees designs from other Canadian cities. Too bad we cannot have a National Fashion Week to show off all the talented designers we have across Canada.

PEDRAM KARIMI was born in Iran and spent his teenage years in Austria. Pedram’s designs are for both men and women. They were oversized, simply constructed clothing with lots of impact. He began his studies as a designer at the London College of Fashion. He won second place in Telio’s Breakthrough Designer Competition during Montreal Fashion Week.

Jamaican born designer, Claudette Floyd, has made her mark in Quebec for 15 years. After graduating from LaSalle College in fashion design she founded Rush Couture in the heart of the Main. Her fabric for her tops, skirts and dresses reminded us of raffia and brocade combined. It had a definite “Out of Africa

edge”.

Nadya Toto creates clothing that emphasizes refinement while indulging an ultra-feminine edge. Her ready-to-wear collection is reminiscence of folkloric prints from Eastern Europe, a trend for 2014.

Kenskoff” is a magical place in the mountains of Haiti and was the influence for Ralph Leroy’s men’s and women’s collections.

Ralph used leather, suede, silk and wool for both his menswear and womenswear. He has designed very wearable clothes with a classic twist.

Mélissa Nepton’s fall-winter 2013-2014 collection is influenced by fluidity, structure and “antistructure”. Finding its inspiration in the early 20th Century cubism art she has combined stripes with chiffon and developed a lovely fluid movement with the harder edge of stripes.

Danielle MARTIN & Pao LIM besides winning national and international awards, are both graduates from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design. Cobalt blue was the dominant feature in their collection with fringe and fluid chiffon over dress that was done in both cobalt and white.
