New show in town—Check out Vancouver Alternative Fashion Week (VALT)

I chatted with Kat Fernyhough-Creative Director of  VALT, a seven year veteran of Toronto Alternative Fashion Week. VALT is the combination of Fashion, Art and Music in a 3 day show. This is so right for Vancouver, the city of so much undiscovered talent. The fashion designers choosen to show their collections are from Vancouver, Victoria and  Alberta. Kat always thought this type of event would be even better if it was held in Vancouver, which she visits on a frequent basis and will soon be a resident.

I was impressed with her grasp of what it takes to put on an effective Fashion Week, some of that is due to her BA in Art and Design and Fibre Art’s training. She and a panel have already chosen 20 alternative fashion designers, lined up, 6 artists and musicians from Ohio, Virginia and Toronto etc. The venue is The Ironworks, east of Gastown at 235 Alexander Street.

The overarching theme for the 3-day show on November 23-25 is Apocalypse! Each night this theme is broken down into Decadence, Decay and Delight. Decadence over-the-top hedonism that has only a brief shelf life before it’s end. Decay is the logical step after the fall of Decadence, the destructive step that leads to renewal, and social change. Delight is the rebirth that follows, the sprout that grows in the once spoiled land, the hope of the new.

Check this one out, it is sure to surprise, impress and showcase the talent Vancouver has to offer.
